5 Tips To Be Prepared For The Unexpected!

As you're reading this, I am having surgery to repair a torn ligament in my thumb. It's been 30+ years since I've had any surgeries. How do we prepare for the unexpected in our lives? Especially as we get older, the unexpected medical issues can happen at any time.  Here are 5 tips on how to deal with the unexpected be it a medical issue, job loss, or a broken appliance.

Understand that the unexpected happens. We know we can't plan for everything and the unexpected will happen, eventually, and we can't change that. We can change how we react to the unexpected. Our mindset can change an event from stressful to being prepared and calm.

Have savings set aside.  Knowing the unexpected is a part of life, having three months savings set aside for just such an event can make a difference on how we handle this stress of the unexpected. It can change a negative into a manageable event.  Whether it's a job loss or a broken appliance, you will be prepared.

Run through different scenarios in your mind, to plan how you would handle different events.  An example might be if you got into a fender bender. Are you prepared with the correct documents you might need and are they easily accessible? Proof on insurance, vehicle registration, driver's license, pen, and paper all together in an easy to reach place-in the car- in case of emergency.

Have an emergency supply kit in car and home.  To be prepared, for any unexpected event, have a food & supply kit in both the trunk of your car and in a safe place at home.  Get a Rubbermaid container and fill it with a blanket, water, snacks, paper towels, first aid kit, batteries, mini tool kit, radio, portable phone charger, fire extinguisher, tire gauge, foam tire sealant, jumper cables, and flashlight, and garbage bag. Having these in the home and in the trunk of your car might not only help you, someday, but maybe someone else too.

Have your paper affairs in order.  Make sure your beneficiaries are up to date on all your accounts. Ask an attorney about a will or a living trust. Think about investing in life insurance to take care of those important to you. Making sure all of these things are taken care of will go along way to ease your mind, in the event of an emergency.

I'm hoping these tips helped you, as they have me. Think of me as you read this, as I'll be in the middle of my own "unexpected event". 😊👍💕
